Bio

Allen Madsen is an internationally renowned Swedish artist. Madsen’s work centres around the Japanese concept of Ma: a reimagining of space that finds significance in absence just as much as in presence. Madsen’s visual translation of the concept focuses on the intention of negative space and its relationship with the subject of the artwork. Inspired by the Dutch Masters, Vameer and Rembrandt, Madsen’s practice is anchored by his command of draughtsmanship. The detail of his still-life depictions work in conjunction with the introspective nature of his bold compositions and allusions to space. In doing so, Madsen creates technically remarkable paintings which incite contemplative reactions from his viewers. Madsen's work has been displayed internationally, including solo exhibitions in Sweden, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. He has lived in Paris and Sweden and has travelled extensively through Italy and Spain. He currently resides in Spain, where he can be found painting in his studio, enjoying the long days of natural light.
